  • The title [A World Unsuspected] comes from “The Descent,” a poem by Williams Carlos Williams, whose poetry gave Red Wheelbarrow Writers its name. In our call for submissions, we asked for fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that captures the importance of a particular place and its power to surprise, transform, and inspire. Willams’ keen observation of everyday scenes reveals how simple, seemingly mundane encounters can have a profound impact. We sought pieces that explore how the experience of a place can alter perspective, shift understanding, or spark a revelation.

HamLit (Issue. 7: due west)

“A Hermit Likes the Sound of North”

  • 2024

  • HamLit’s first equinox issue features poetry and short fiction from seven PNW writers hell bent on arguing with Helios. A longer day can lead to leaner years, larks, landmines planted and forgotten. Or perhaps the conflict is with Apollo. What is light, after all, once it’s been polluted? The spark inside each of us probably holds the real blame, unrelentingly alight no matter what the sky tells us.

Atop our own internal fires, this collection blisters and smokes, asking each reader to question: Sun pressures only we understand. When there ought to be a better way. Lessons lamented in the gap. If crayons drew safety. A gift that aims to trick. The way forgotten truths explode. How a parched skull still smiles.

Bright rays have you in their sights now. Will you lean in? You can keep your seat if you want. Just turn your face due west, as the last beams dip below that far off ridge.

You are the sunset. You are here now.

Rabble review (no. 7)

“Begging in Swelter”

“The Position Bestowed Upon Us

  • 2023

  • Where RR5 explored our relationships with others and RR6 delved deep into our relationships with work, RABBLE REVIEW No.7 examines our work/life imbalances, the sheer weight and strain of workaday subsistence. This year has seen workers in healthcare, fast-food, the auto industry, and Hollywood realize their collective power. Bodily autonomy continues to be attacked and the ever-worsening climate crisis reminds us time is running out. Western governments are actively supporting the genocide of Palestinians by Israel and it is all streamed directly to our phones.

From anxieties about precarious employment to the strains of unfulfilling work and stagnant wages, RR7 darts in and out of the experiences of the laboring multitude to ask: can we really blame anyone for wanting to rest on the sofa and escape into the sensational unreality of entertainment?
